Stanly County Baseball Notebook

North Stanly, South Stanly earn wins over Chatham Central; West Stanly tops Central Academy

Thursday, April 3, 2014 — In baseball games this week, North Stanly and South Stanly both earned non-conference wins over Chatham Central while the Comets also earned a YVC West win over Gray Stone and West Stanly topped Central Academy in a Rocky River Conference matchup.

Wednesday’s Games

North Stanly 6, Gray Stone 4

In a Yadkin Valley Conference West matchup on Wednesday, the Comets earne a 6-4 win over the Knights.

On the road Tuesday night, Matthew Lambert provided the offense with two RBIs for the Comets and pitched a complete-game one hitter in a 2-0 win.

West Stanly 5, Central Academy 0

The Colts improved to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the RRC with a 5-0 win over the Cougars.

Zac Brown earned the complete-game win on the mound for the Colts allowing no runs on three hits with 14 strikeouts.

Brown also helped his own cause, going 2-3 with a double and two RBIs. Will Smith was also 2-3 for West Sanly with two RBIs and two stolen bases, and Damon Smith and Cooper Burgess each had a run and a hit.

    The Stanly County 15 year-old All-Stars Babe Ruth Baseball team battled its way through the losers’ bracket after suffering a 10-9 loss to the Union County Americans to reach the championship finals.
    Stanly rallied to force a deciding third game but Union County prevailed to earn a trip to the regionals in Varina, Virginia.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.

    In the final two games of the Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League for the West Stanly squad, the Colts traveled to Scotland County for a doubleheader, making up for Tuesday’s rainout.
