West Stanly suffers home loss to Central Cabarrus

Sunday, September 22, 2013 — One of the more over-used clichés in the coverage of football games is the phrase “turnovers will kill you.”

However, turnovers have been something that has haunted the West Stanly football team the past two weeks.

A late fumble in last week’s loss to North Stanly gave the Comets the chance to drive down the field and score the go-ahead touchdown.

In the case of Friday’s home loss to Central Cabarrus, five turnovers gave the visiting Vikings more opportunities to put their high-scoring offense back onto the field.

The offense for West Stanly (1-4) was still productive Friday night as the Colts scored 21 points, the fourth time in five games this season that West has scored 21 or more points in a game.

B.J. Hill led the rushing attack for West with 108 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown, while Ryan McCormick had 92 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown of his own.

Trey Barbee scored the first touchdown of the evening for the Colts, trailing Central 14-0 in the first quarter, on a 40-yard run. He finished with 67 yards on six carries.

Matt Price and Barbee combined for 47 passing yards with five completions on 10 attempts. However, West had two passes picked off. Ethan Morgan had four catches for 42 yards.

“Often we played well at times when we didn’t turn the ball over,” West head coach James Johnson said, noting that the team had close to 270 rushing yards on offense.

Trailing 49-7 at the half, the Colts continued to compete, scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns.

“I’m proud of the way we competed; we had a better second half,” Johnson said.

The Colts have a bye week this Friday and will be in action Oct. 4 with a non-conference game at Piedmont.
