South Stanly downed at home by Central Academy

Sunday, September 22, 2013 — South Stanly’s varsity football squad stepped out of conference play for the final time this season on Friday night when the Rowdy Rebel Bulls hosted a Central Academy squad that has grown by leaps and bounds since the team’s inception in the 2007 season.

Six years ago, the Cougars posted an 0-11 season, but more than that, did not even score a touchdown until the first game of the next season. Central’s first win came in 2009 at Highland Tech, and the Cougars have continued to improve, including a playoff appearance in 2010 and a playoff win at Mount Airy 27-23 in 2011.

The Bulls only dressed 26 players Friday night while the Cougars had about 45 players in uniform as Central earned their first win ever over South 35-3.

Barnardo Granados’ 41-yard field goal was the only points of the night for the Bulls (1-3) after the Cougars (3-2) scored three first-half touchdowns.

“(Central) was very athletic and outweighs us 30 pounds across the front,” South head coach Tasker Fleming said.

“They reminded me of West Montgomery with the number of skill people (they have).”

South’s defense did have three goal-line stands against the Central offense and kept the Cougars off the board on those drives.

The Bulls host Union Academy (2-2, 1-1), coached by former Carolina Panther fullback Brad Hoover, on Friday. The Cardinals lost at East Montgomery 14-13 on Friday.
