Stanly County Volleyball Notebook

Albemarle and Gray Stone stay atop YVC; North Stanly, West Stanly earn wins

Sunday, September 29, 2013 — The volleyball season for the teams in Stanly County has gone past the halfway mark as squads face their conference opponents for the second time in the 2013 campaign.

In volleyball games on Thursday evening, Albemarle, Gray Stone and North Stanly all earned Yadkin Valley Conference West victories, while West Stanly got a victory in a Rocky River Conference matchup with Parkwood.

Albemarle 3

South Stanly 0

The battle for supremacy in YVC West volleyball has just two weeks left in the regular season to determine a winner.

Albemarle and Gray Stone sit atop the division with one loss each  in the YVC West, with North Stanly and South Stanly right behind in third and fourth, respectively.

The Bulldogs kept pace with Gray Stone for the top spot with a 3-0 win at South Stanly Thursday.

Scores of the match were 25-16, 28-26 and 25-18 in favor of Albemarle.

Akela Branch led the Bulldogs (13-2, 7-1 YVC West) with 14 kills, adding 12 digs as well. Samantha Blue added 10 digs and nine kills, while Caroline Synder had a team-high five aces. Setter Morgan Smet led the Bulldogs with 27 assists.

Landis Bogel led the Bulls (11-5, 4-4) with seven kills, while McKenzie Thompson and Cidney Bowers had four kills each.

South libero Kayla Smith caused a brief delay in the match late in the second set when her head appeared to have hit the floor hard. Smith came out of the lineup but returned later for the third set, finishing with nine digs on the night.

Albemarle plays Monday at East Rowan while will be back in action Tuesday versus Chatham Central.

Gray Stone 3

Queen’s Grant 0

The Knights hosted Queen’s Grant on Thursday evening and maintained their standing in first place in the YVC West with a 3-0 win with scores of 25-10, 25-7 and 25-13.

Jordan Redman led Gray Stone (11-1, 7-1 YVC West) with 6 kills and Shannon Efird added seven kills. Roni Boss and Maggie Habeeb each had eight assists.

Gray Stone will host South Davidson on Tuesday night.

North Stanly 3

Union Academy 0

The Comets improved to 5-3 in the YVC West and maintained a one-game lead for third place with a 3-0 win. Scores of the match were 25-17, 28-26 and 25-20.

North Stanly hosts West Montgomery (14-3) on Tuesday night.

West Stanly 3

Parkwood 0

After suffering a loss earlier in the season to the Rebels, the Colts rebounded with a win Thursday night over Parkwood with scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-17.

Meg Ball lead the Colts (7-7, 4-2 RRC) with 18 digs, while Meredith Summers added 15.

Summers also led West with 12 kills, while Courtney Grant added nine kills and Cam Fraley had eight. Hailey Ulrick had 13 assists with Cat Morgan adding 11 for the Colts.

West plays at Central Academy on Tuesday evening.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
