Albemarle soccer tops North Stanly in regular season finale

Thursday, October 24, 2013 — The high school regular season came to an end for North Stanly and Albemarle on Wednesday night with a match at the Bulldogs’ stadium as the two teams battled icy cold winds and each other.

Albemarle jumped out to an early lead and outscored the Comets 3-2 in the final half of play to earn a 5-2 win over North.

The Bulldogs (11-9, 6-4 YVC West) got on the board in the seventh minute when Ross Plyler scored, then added another goal 16 minutes later when Adam Yang scored on a breakaway to give Albemarle a 2-0 lead.

North Stanly (3-13, 3-8) nearly scored with three minutes left in the first half on a breakway chance but the shot went just wide right of the net.

The Bulldogs answered that challenge with a goal in the final minute of the first half from Adam Yang, giving Albemarle a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

Three minutes into the second half, North Stanly scored off a corner kick to make it 3-1, where the score stayed for the next 20 minutes of play.

Mason Krol put the Bulldogs back up by three goals in the 64th minute with a goal assisted by Plyler for a 4-1 Albemarle lead.

The Comets then converted on a penalty kick one minute later to again pull to within two goals.

Albemarle finished the scoring in the game off in the 76th minute with a goal from Jack Williams.

The Bulldogs finished third in the YVC West behind Gray Stone (16-3-3, overall, 7-2-1 YVC-W) and Union Academy (15-5-2, 9-0-1 YVC).

The state playoffs will begin on Oct. 30.
