When you look at South Stanly’s 60-7 gridiron loss to Yadkin Valley Conference leader West Montgomery Friday in Norwood, you would have never guessed it was a two-score game late in the second period.
But with South trailing 20-7, fumbles on three straight possessions by the Rowdy Rebel Bulls opened the door for the explosive Warrior offense.
West’s offense scored 13 unanswered points in the final two minutes for a 33-7 advantage at the break.
The Warriors’ offense that averages more than 57 points in league action continued the hum in the second half, scoring 27 unanswered points for their sixth conference victory, keeping them perfect in YVC play at 6-0 and 8-1 overall. The Bulls fall to 3-3 in conference action and 3-6 overall.
West’s offense totaled 446 yards with 320 yards coming on the ground while West’s defense limited the Bulls to only 135 yards of offense with 116 on the ground. South junior running back Montrell Brewer tallied 68 of those rushing yards with 50 of those yards coming on a run early in the second quarter, setting up the Bulls’ only touchdown. Junior quarterback Luke Burris hooked up with sophomore Sawyer Lee for a 4-yard touchdown pass. Bernardo Granadas’ extra point trimmed the Warriors’ lead to 14-7 with 9:01 left in the first half.
West senior quarterback Caleb Drake put his team on top with a pair of touchdowns in the opening frame on runs of four and 70 yards. Walker Harrison booted the extra points, putting West up 14-0 at the end of the first period.
The Bulls cut the Warrior advantage to 14-7 on Lee’s touchdown reception. On the ensuing kickoff, Warrior A.J. Collins raced 98 yards for the touchdown, moving West to a 20-7 lead with 8:45 left in the half.
Neither team was able to score until the final two minutes when West took advantage of the Bulls’ three fumbles. Harrison kicked a pair of field goals of 40 and 27 yards and Tirea Sims caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Drake, giving West a 33-7 lead at the break.
The second half was all West with the Warriors scoring 27 unanswered points. Senior running back Suave Pegues ran for a pair of scores of nine and 11 yards. Matthews Harkins added a 55-yard gallop and freshman Joe Leake tacked on a 30-yard run for their final touchdowns.
The Bulls’ offense suffered a couple of losses at the quarterback position when Burris went down to an injury and Brewer suffered an injury, putting senior Joston Horton at the position.
South hosts cross-county rival North (6-3, 4-2 YVC) Friday on Friday night at 7:30 (see related story, 1C).
