Stanly County Volleyball Notebook

Thursday, September 12, 2013 — The volleyball teams of Stanly County continued their regular-season schedules as North Stanly had a road match at Chatham Central, Albemarle faced off against North Moore, South Stanly travelled to West Montgomery and Gray Stone was also on the road at East Montgomery.

Tuesday’s Matches

South Stanly 3

West Montgomery 2

Traditionally, in the recent history of Yadkin Valley Conference volleyball, the West Montgomery Warriors have been among the most successful teams in the conference, either winning conference titles or finishing in the upper echelon of the conference.

This season, the Warriors reeled off nine wins in a row before losing to Union Pines on Monday.

Tuesday’s matchup with South Stanly was a battle between two teams in different divisions of the now-subdivided YVC. In a five-set battle, the Rebel Bulls earned their sixth win of the season.

Scores of the match were 22-25, 25-13, 25-21, 19-25 and 15-13 in favor of the Bulls (6-3).

Freshman Landis Bogel led the hitters for South Stanly with 10 kills, while Dajé Drake added eight kills and had four blocks. Senior setter Riley Cohen had 27 assists and Rachel Almond had 11 aces for the Bulls.

The Bulls play at Carolina Christian tonight then host a tri-match Saturday. South takes on East Montgomery at 11 a.m., followed by West Stanly and East at 1 p.m.  South and West then play at 3 p.m.

North Stanly 3

Chatham Central 0

The Comets earned a 3-0 sweep over the Bears with scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-21.

Bailey Blankenship led the Comets with six kills and four aces while Leah Russell had six kills for North.

The Comets host East Montgomery tonight.

Albemarle 3

North Moore 0

The Bulldogs improved to 6-2 overall with a win at North Moore with scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-19.

Akela Branch led Albemarle with 16 kills, while Tiffanie Currie added seven kills and Samantha Blue had 11 digs.

Albemarle travels to South Davidson tonight.

Gray Stone 3

East Montgomery 0

The Knights continued their strong start to the 2013 season with a 3-0 win over the Eagles with scores of 25-14, 25-11 and 25-8.

Jordan Redman led Gray Stone with 15 kills while Maggie Habeeb had 15 assists.

Gray Stone hosts North Moore tonight.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
