Wednesday, November 21, 2012 — The high school varsity basketball season officially got underway on Monday night in Stanly County when the North Stanly basketball teams hosted future conference opponent North Moore in non-conference action.

Having lost six seniors to graduation, including three All-Rocky River Conference selections along with the 2011-12 RRC Player of the Year, the Comet girls faced a North Moore team just two years removed from having won the Yadkin Valley Conference regular-season title.

The Comets trailed by double digits early in the game and fought back, but a late Mustangs rally led to a 54-49 win.

Gentry Grubb caught fire from the outside in the middle two periods for North Stanly (0-1), finishing with 17 points including five made three-pointers. Jenni Speight added 14 points for the Comets.

Jalisa Davis scored 10 of her game-high 21 points for North Moore (1-0) in a first-quarter push that gave the Mustangs an early lead.

The visiting North squad went on a 14-3 run to open the first period and led 18-4 after one quarter before the home North team got their offense going. The Comets started connecting from the floor and forcing the Mustangs to miss shots from the perimeter. North Stanly went on a 7-1 push over the first three minutes of the second period and narrowed the gap to four at halftime.

North Moore led by as much as nine with 3:37 left in the third but the Comets went on an 9-0 run to tie the game with 20.8 seconds left in the third, capped off by three straight free throws from Melissa Vint.

The Comets kept the game close in the fourth, leading 43-42 with five minutes left before North Moore went on a 6-0 push to retake the lead. A Jenna Huff three-pointer cut the lead to 50-49 with 1:22 on the clock. The Mustangs hit two free throws and got a late bucket to seal the victory.

“We played hard tonight, but missed free throws killed us,” North Head Coach Greg Speight said, noting that the Comets were 16-of-26 from the field including missing four front ends of a one-and-one.

“I’m proud of the way we came back but we rushed some shots at crucial times.”

North Stanly’s teams will travel to East Montgomery next Tuesday for non-conference games with the Eagles.

The North Stanly boys’ varsity squad was forced on Monday night to open the season without sophomore forward T.J. Smith, out with an ankle injury. North Moore pressed the Comets for much of the middle part of the game and held off a late Comet surge for a 50-42 victory.

The win was costly for the Mustangs (1-0) as forward Malik Chisholm was helped off the floor after an apparent knee injury.

Dylan Blalock and Elijah Green had 15 points each to lead the Comets (0-1).

Blalock scored five points late in the first quarter to give North Stanly a 13-7 lead, but the Mustangs’ pressure forced the Comets into several turnovers in the next two periods. The Comets made just two baskets in the middle periods.

North trailed by 19 in the fourth quarter yet fought back to narrow the gap to six points with 24.2 seconds left in the game.

“I’m proud that the guys didn’t quit but we have to play defense for four quarters. Tonight was a good lesson,” North Head Coach Chris Misenheimer said.
