The varsity basketball teams from the four public high schools in Stanly County will hold the annual holiday classic held between Christmas and New Year’s Day tonight and tomorrow night.
Thursday at West Stanly
The firs1t holiday games will have the rematch from both team’s last Wednesday’s games at Albemarle when the Bulldogs and the North Stanly Comets face each other, starting with the girls’ game at 4 p.m. and the boys’ game scheduled for 5:30.
The North girls come into the game having ended a three-game losing slide with back-to-back wins and a 6-4 overall record, while the Bulldogs have one of the top players in the county in Akela Branch (22.7 points and 13.6 rebounds per game) but are 0-7 this season.
On the boys’ side, Albemarle has won five in a row including a 71-57 win over the Comets last week. North (2-8) has lost five in a row, with their last win coming Dec. 11 at home over East Montgomery.
The final two games of the night pit the host West Stanly Colts against the South Stanly Rowdy Rebel Bulls. The girls’ teams are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. with the boys following around 8:30.
In the previous matchups at South on Dec. 6, Devin Fincher had a big night for the Colts as her 17 points powered West to an 48-41 win over the Bulls. Entering tonight’s game, West is 4-4 overall and South is 2-6.
In the previous boys’ matchup, West jumped out to a 13-4 lead but South eventually tied the game in the third quarter before the Colts put the game out of reach with a 7-0 run in the fourth period. B.J. Hill led the Colts with 17 points while Michard Richardson led South with 25.
West’s record is 2-6 while South is 4-4 under first-year head coach Mike Crump.
Friday’s Games at North Stanly
On Friday, the venue switches to North Stanly, where the Albemarle and West girls get the games started at 4 p.m. with the boys’ teams at 5:30.
The host Comets will take on South Stanly on Friday, with the girls starting at 7 p.m. and the boys at 8:30.
