Carolina Christian posts home victories

Monday, January 21, 2013 — The high school varsity basketball teams of Carolina Christian School continued their season on Tuesday night at home. The CCS Lady Lions hosted a tough Carolina Home Educators squad, while the men’s team hosted Fletcher Academy.

On Tuesday night, the Carolina Home Educators rolled into Locust with a 21-3 record to face the undefeated Carolina Christian Lady Lions.

This contest lived up to its billing as the Cougars, from Pinnacle, jumped out to an early 15-6 lead.

The Lady Lions (13-0) got a 3 pointer from Reiley Burris to cut the deficit to 6 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, the Lady Lions established their inside game behind center Chloe Burris and took a 22-21 lead into the break.

Moving into the second half, Chelsea Burris nailed consecutive 15 footers to pull the Lady Lions ahead.

CCS, playing with a lead, forced the Cougars out of their stifling 3-2 zone and opened the game up from that point on.

The Cougars, who made seven three-pointers on the night, were led by Leah Church with 19 points.

Chloe Burris scored 18 points and had five assists, while twin sister Chelsea had 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Lions have now won 29 consecutive games dating back to January 2012.

“We got excellent guard play tonight. Sarah Grigg was feeling under the weather, but she refused to lay down. Kaydi Pinion also gave us a strong performance on both ends of the court,” CCS head coach Randy Burris said.

In the men's game, CCS overpowered Fletcher Academy in a conference matchup.

With the win, the Lions improve to 10-6 on the season.

 CCS, led by Troy George with 16 points, pulled out to a 31-11 lead at the half.

The Lions moved the ball well offensively and displayed a balanced offensive attack, continuing to open the game up in the second half en route to a 52-13 win.

Justin Sellers added 15 points while Steven Carr chipped in with 9 for the Lions.

“I like our ball movement tonight. It has been a priority for us to improve offensively, and we took a step forward tonight,” CCS head coach Marcus Dilligard said.

    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
