Carolina Christian girls win title at CSD Tipoff Tournament; boys take second place

Boys win over Gray Stone, lose  narrowly to CSD

The Carolina Christian School boys’ basketball team took second place at the inaugural Thanksgiving event, topping Gray Stone on Friday then losing a hotly contested game Saturday to the host Spartans.

Carolina Christian erased a double-digit halftime deficit and battled into the fourth quarter with the Com-munity School of Davidson.

However, free throws allowed the host Spartans to pull ahead in the final seconds for the win.

CSD shot 11-of-17 from the foul line in the final period as Isaac Gittleman hit 7-of-8 in the final period to seal the win for the Spartans, hitting three free throws in the final 15 seconds.

Trailing 40-27 in the third, the Lions opened with a 7-0 run, cutting the lead to six points.

Justin Sellers scored six of his team-high 25 points in the first minute of the fourth to give the Lions a lead. CCS led by as much as seven midway through the fourth before the Spartans’ Carson Talbert tied it in the final minute and hit a free throw with 17.7 seconds for the lead.

“I’m proud how we fought tonight; you gotta play with heart,” Carolina Christian head coach Marcus Dilligard said.

The Lions opened the Thanksgiving tournament with a four-point win over Gray Stone despite 26 points from the Knights’ Ray Kowalski.

CCS led by seven in the third quarter before Gray Stone battled back to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

Jimmy Martin knocked down four free throws in the final minute to give the Lions the win.

    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
