North Stanly Comet squads swept in Rocky River openers on Friday

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 — The high school basketball squads of North Stanly High School played their first two conference games of the 2012-13 season on Friday and Monday nights against Forest Hills and Cuthbertson, respectively.

On Friday night, the North Stanly Comets opened play in the Rocky River Conf-erence with a road game at Forest Hills.

The host Jackets used a big second quarter to end a four-game winning streak for the Comets in a 48-29 loss for North.

Gentry Grubb led the Comets (4-2, 0-1 RRC) with seven points, while Ishemia Bivens led the Jackets with 22 points, hitting on 9-of-28 shooting from the field.

North Stanly’s offense struggled to put points on the board, scoring the fewest in a game since scoring just 32 points in a loss to Berry Academy on Jan. 22, 2010.

The Comets shot 9-of-51 on the night, hitting 2-of-19 from the three-point arc and  9-of-19 at the free-throw line.

Forest Hills outrebounded the Comets 49-27 in the game, with sophomore Onyx Burns leading all rebounders with 10. Dana Beadle led North Stanly with eight boards.

The two-game winning streak that the North boys’ squad had built in non-conference play ended on Friday night with a loss at Forest Hills in the team’s opening Rocky River Conference game of the season.

The North teams travel to East Rowan on Thursday.
