Thursday’s Games

West Stanly 43

Albemarle 36

The Colt girls went on the road Thursday night and jumped out to a double-digit lead early at Albemarle in non-conference action.

West held off the Bulldogs late, along with a dominating performance from Albemarle center Akela Branch, to earn a 43-36 road win.

Sarah Talley led the Colts (4-3) with 14 points.

Branch scored 27 of the Bulldogs’ 36 points in the game, adding nine boards, five blocks and five steals for Albemarle (0-4). Katie Dick also added nine rebounds for the ‘Dogs and freshman Kyleigh McLen-don had four steals.

West shot 55 percent from the free throw line in the game, something that West head coach Wesley Kidd said could have put the game out of reach if the Colts had shot better.

The Colts led by 14 after one quarter but their lead was shaved to one point in the fourth quarter 36-35. West finished the game on a 7-1 push to preserve the win.

“I am proud that the girls battled back and did not let the momentum shift beat them,” Kidd said.

West Stanly opens Rocky River Conference play on Tuesday night at Monroe. The Colts were scheduled to play Central Academy this Friday but the game was rescheduled to Jan. 2 of next year.
