Stanly County seniors swept in season series by Rowan County

Sunday, June 22, 2014 — The Stanly County American Legion senior baseball team took to the field at Don Montgomery Park Sunday facing a Rowan County team that has the most wins so far this season of any team in Area III.

Rowan’s win percentage is also second-best in Area III behind the Northeast Conference’s High Point (13-2).

The visitors scored in every inning Sunday night and improved to 4-0 in the Southeast Conference with a 19-3 win over host Post 76.

Brandon White allowed one earned run on six hits to get the win for Rowan County (14-4, 4-0 SE Conf.).

Liberty freshman Russ Weiker took the loss for Stanly (7-12, 2-2) in two innings on the mound.

The 19 runs scored by Rowan County are the most surrendered by a Stanly senior baseball team since a 20-3 home loss on June 8, 2010, to Southern Rowan.

Five of Rowan’s first six batters came around to score in a five-run top of the first inning burst, including a two-RBI double from Chance Bowden and a two-run home run to right field by designated hitter Heath Mitchum.

Rowan added two runs in the second and three in the third before Stanly County got on the board in the bottom of the third. Weiker brought home Luke Burris with an RBI sacrifice fly and Noah Crisco also scored on the play due to an errant throw.

The visitors added eight more runs over the next three innings, while Stanly pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth. Brian Stevens singled, Sawyer Lee was hit by a pitch and Cameron Vick walked to load the bases with no outs. After a flyout, Crisco drove in Stevens with a single to center field, but Lee was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Crisco’s hit.

Rowan added one late run in the top of the seventh off of Stevens, the fifth pitcher of the night for Post 76. The five Stanly pitchers allowed 13 earned runs, issued 10 walks and struck out eight.

The loss kept Stanly in second place in the Southeast by a half-game over both Kannapolis and South Rowan through Sunday’s games.

Stanly County plays a doubleheader Tuesday versus Kannapolis. The first game will be at 10 a.m. at Northwest Cabarrus High School, with the second part of the twinbill at Don Montgomery Park at 7 p.m.

Post 76 wraps up the regular season with a home-at-home series Thursday and Friday with Southern Rowan, with Stanly hosting the first game and traveling to South Rowan High School the next night.

Pulling into Charlotte Motor Speedway, the first thing one may think about is getting in one of those really fast cars and taking a spin around the track.
Cracking the motor, hearing the roar, tearing down the front stretch at 200 mph with numerous other cars doing the same. The rush, excitement and adrenaline pumping all while maintaining focus and poise as you power the aggressive vehicle around the track.
