Saturday, November 16, 2013 — Friday evening, November 15th at 6pm at the Cape Fear Country Club the 2014 North Carolina Azalea Festival’s official print was unveiled. Each year the festival President chooses an artist who creates the official artwork for the festival that year. “The 2014 North Carolina Azalea Festival is honored to announce that the world renowned artist William Mangum was commissioned to create the official print to be shared with the hundreds of thousands of festival participants. We feel it was a perfect partnership between our festival and his tremendous talent” said Steve Coble, the 2014 North Carolina Azalea Festival President.
WILLIAM MANGUM – NORTH CAROLINA ARTIST – “Celebrating Life through Art”
We are constantly encouraged to “find what we love and make it a career.” That is exactly what William Mangum has done. Along the way, he utilized a multitude of personal talents and community relationships to craft a career in one of the most challenging of occupations – being an artist.
Using a controlled style to produce a realism that is rare among watercolorists, Mangum achieves remarkable detail and precision, and his saturated washes of color add depth to his soulful landscapes. Like the artist himself, his paintings radiate a refreshing directness and clarity.

Bill is a prolific artist, gallery owner, publisher, author, keynote speaker and designer. He has traveled the world gathering inspiration for more than 3,000 of his original works of art. The resulting creations have garnered him countless fans across the globe and allowed him to forge relationships with dozens of Fortune 500 companies.
His upcoming furniture collection in collaboration with Klaussner Home Furnishings, Carolina Preserves, is designed around the artist’s aesthetic lifestyle and international travels, and will soon bring Mangum’s artistry into America’s homes through a whole new medium.
Never forgetting the blessings of his unique talent, Bill has advocated for many philanthropic causes during his professional career. His efforts have made him a true community partner as well as a tireless volunteer.
One of the causes dearest to his heart is advocating for the homeless population. Since 1988, Bill has created an Annual Honor Card to raise awareness and funds for Shelters across North Carolina. The Honor Card Program and Bill’s artistic efforts were recognized on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams “Making a Difference” segment. To date the Honor Card has raised over 4.5 million dollars to meet the needs of the indigent community across the state.
In conjunction with the celebration of the 25th Honor Card Bill has created, he is releasing his 8th book Michael’s Gift. This extraordinary volume speaks of Bill’s humble roots, his challenging art career and passion for the needy. Michael’s Gift also chronicles the evolution of the Honor Card Program and the inspiration for each of the paintings that have been instruments in this nationally recognized program.
Bill received both his Bachelor and MFA degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He and his wife Cynthia have made Greensboro their home since graduating. They have three grown children – Alexander, Preston and Berkley, and two granddaughters – Jadyn and Gabriella and a new grandson – Samuel.

The mission of the North Carolina Azalea Festival is to be nationally recognized as a showcase for our community's rich array of artwork, gardens, history and culture through recreational, educational and family-oriented events. The Festival encourages volunteerism and civic participation as it contributes to the region's economy and promotes the unique qualities of Wilmington's river-to-the-sea community.
