Joallen Lowder of Albemarle has been named the local program co-coordinator for Special Olympics Stanly County effective immediately, according to Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) President/CEO Keith L. Fishburne.

A retired exceptional children teacher, Lowder has more than 30 years of experience working in the school system. With Ashe County Schools, she held positions as director of career and technical education, assistant principal and principal. She has volunteered with Special Olympics Ashe County by recruiting youth leaders for Spring Games and helping to facilitate competition.

As local program co-coordinator, Lowder will assist Kathy Odell, who has been serving as co-coordinator for Stanly County, in the implementation of Special Olympics activities within Stanly County by leading a volunteer committee that will provide sports training and competition opportunities along with health and wellness initiatives for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This involves recruiting, training and managing volunteers, increasing athlete participation and raising funds in support of the program.
