A fatal wreck Thursday night claimed three lives while another victim was airlifed to a local hospital.

According to law enforcement officials, two vehicles were traveling .2 miles north of Kimrey Road, 2.7 miles south of Albemarle around 11:23 p.m. when vehicle one, traveling south on Highway 138 ran off the right side of the roadway and overcorrected, crossing the center line, striking vehicle two in the side.

Three Albemarle High School students in vehicle one, ranging in age from 17 to 18, were killed. Another passenger in vehicle one was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.

Kim Scott, director of Student Services for Stanly County Schools made a statement on its behalf regarding the tragedy.

“Through our grief initiative...social workers, school nurses and community pastors are all visiting with families,” he said.

The Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident while contacting the families of the victims.
