National Weather Service adds Stanly to tornado watch today

Saturday, January 11, 2014 — The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Stanly and surrounding counties until 6 p.m. Saturday.

The agency said Saturday morning that there is an “increasing threat for strong to severe thunderstorms across western and southern piedmont early this afternoon.”

Furthermore, “a line of strong to potentially severe storms will enter the western and southern piedmont of Central North Carolina around midday and advance steadily east. Wind gusts up to 45 mph will occur with the thunderstorms with a few gusts possibly as high as 60 mph. Winds of this magnitude will topple trees and a few powerlines.”
