Griffin presents calendar

Wednesday, February 13, 2013 — Superintendent Dr. Terry Griffin presented the 2013-2014 school calendars to the board of education last week.

At the January school board meeting, Griffin showed the board there were two options of calendars on the table, a 180-day calendear and a 185-day calendar. Both options were made available to the public to view and make suggestions.

Before she could begin on the 2013-2014 calendars, Griffin noted that they needed to amend the 2012-2013 calendar for Stanly Early College.

The Early College’s calendar had 216 days instead of 215 days. Griffin requested that they correct and amend the calendar by dropping a professional day on May 29.

This will not impact student days, Griffin said, but it will provide the correct number of days for the school year.

“We would like to recommend that Stanly County Schools adopt a 180-day calendar for the 2013-2014 school year. Per feedback, on the first draft the proefessional day that was originally  scheduled for Nov. 5 was moved to Friday, Nov. 1 in order to provide better alignment at the end of the first quarter.”

Additional revisions, there is also to be a professional day on Oct. 4.  Griffin also recommended that they make Sept. 2 a day off for students.

Griffin noted that the Early College has also decided to accept a 180-day calendar.

Griffin suggested that they add 15 minutes to each day for the elementary schools. Currently, both middle and high schools already operate on a six-hour day, and with this change, all students will attend school an equal length of time.
