Center of Hope to celebrate with open house

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, the Center of Hope and AMI Boutique, 305 Yadkin St., Albemarle, on the campus of Stanly Regional Medical Center, will have an open house from 4-6 p.m. Monday. The Center of Hope is a cancer resource and support center.  

The AMI Boutique, inside the Center of Hope, is a cancer care specialty shop, specializing in mastectomy bras and forms, swimwear, lingerie, scarves and headwear.

Additional items of interest in the boutique include inspirational gifts, cards, queasy pops, lingerie and specialty skin products for the cancer survivor.   

Funded in part by the Cannon Foundation, the resource center offers cancer patients and their families a place of inspiration, support, wellness and hope. The Center of Hope’s resources include:

n A cancer resource library

n Massage therapy

n A hair and nail salon

n Support groups for patients and caregivers

n Classes such as the American Cancer Society’s “I Can Cope” and “Look Good … Feel Better.”

    NEW YORK - Economists love hamburgers. Specifically fast-food burgers. This is partly because all right-thinking human beings love ground meat on a bun, but it's also because the sandwich makes a handy yardstick for international financial comparisons. The ingredients and labor involved in preparing a Big Mac are pretty much the same no matter where you are in the world, so by looking at how many hours of toiling it takes a worker to earn enough to purchase one, you can get a sense of how wages really stack up across countries. The Economist famously created the Big Mac index in 1986 to see which currencies were overvalued. It started as a joke. Now, as the magazine proudly notes, it's a subject of academic study.
