Jury finds Gary W. Sells guilty of double murder in Stanly County

Friday, April 4, 2014 — One hour and 20 minutes is all it took for a jury to find Gary W. Sells guilty for a double murder.

Sells sat emotionless with his mouth slightly ajar as the clerk read the guilty verdict for two counts of first-degree murder. Sells is guilty of fatally shooting Shirley Inez Rummage, 73, and Ricky Dale Lowder, 48, at their 528 N. First Street, Albemarle, residence on March 8, 2009.

Sells was sentenced to two consecutive prison terms of life without the possibility of parole.

Friday's double guilty verdict concludes two weeks in the trial of North Carolina versus Sells and more than five years since the slayings.

Last week I made my annual trip up the mountain to Sparta. My friends have a secluded home near a babbling brook. Their home and property are a haven for peace. It’s a two-plus hour ride to their home that doesn’t feel that long because I look so forward to my time with this great couple. When I arrive, the conversation seems to pick up right where we left it the last time we saw each other.
