Rainfall above normal for July

Friday, July 5, 2012 — Stanly County has experience above average rainfall for early July, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

As of July 5, rainfall for across the county reached nearly four inches. Since June 28, though, some areas of the county have seen as much as nearly eight inches of rain, with the heaviest rainfall on June 28 and 30.

Stanly County has seen more than five times the normal rate of rain for early July. According to NWS, the average rainfall for the first week of July is normally about one to one and half inches.

With the above normal rainfall, several area creeks and streams have flood, causing concern at several low-water bridges.

By July 4, the heavy amounts of rain caused the Yadkin River to nearly reach flood stage.

While Stanly County is no longer under a flash flood warning, it is possible the threat of flooding may still exist as more rain is forecasted for the area in the coming days.

NEW YORK - Economists love hamburgers. Specifically fast-food burgers. This is partly because all right-thinking human beings love ground meat on a bun, but it's also because the sandwich makes a handy yardstick for international financial comparisons. The Economist famously created the Big Mac index in 1986 to see which currencies were overvalued. It started as a joke. Now, as the magazine proudly notes, it's a subject of academic study.
