Stanly Sheriff: Man, 27, kills girlfriend, 16, then self

Wednesday, July 2, 2014 — A man, 27, and his 16-year-old girlfriend were found dead Wednesday morning in an apparent murder suicide.

Kristapher Michael Schmidt and Amanda Christine Hill were discovered dead in a structure at the man’s house by his mother, according to Stanly County Sheriff Rick Burris.

Schmidt is believed to have shot Hill with a .22 rifle before turning the weapon on himself.

“It appears that nobody else was involved,” Burris said.

Hill was shot once in the head.

The fatal shooting is believed to have occurred sometime between 1:15 a.m. and when the bodies were found at 8:30 a.m., Burris said.

Schmidt had left a suicide note for Hill telling her that he was sorry that he had let her down about her mother not being more receptive of their relationship, Burris said.

Burris said to conclude that Hill might have walked in on Schmidt just before taking his own life would be speculative.

“I don’t know what the circumstances were,” Burris said.

“I don’t think it was a pact that they decided they were leaving this world together.”

The couple’s families lived across the street from one another along N.C. Highway 73 near Austin Road. It was in what Burris described as a “man cave” at the man’s and mother’s house where the fatal shootings occurred.

Hill’s mother called deputies at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday after the teenage girl assaulted her when the two argued over the relationship, Burris said.

The mother then told deputies that she did not want her daughter at the man’s house, Burris said.

“When deputies went over to get the girl, she evidently seen them coming and hid,” Burris said.
