Runners organize events for Red Cross in wake of Boston Marathon bombings

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 — The run/walk is 2.62 miles, small in comparrison to the 26.2 miles in a marathon.

But this run isn’t about competition, it’s about giving.

A small group came together Wednesday morning to raise funds for the American Red Cross in response to the bombings Monday at the Boston Marathon.

Three individuals donated $26.20 for the cause.

In addition to the group this morning, runners will gather again at 6:30 tonight at  Stanly County YMCA for the 2.62 mile course.

Donations will be accepted for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The Red Cross used 450 pints of blood Tuesday, according to Peter Asciutto of Albemarle, who is state representative for the Road Runners Club of America.

“The Road Runners Club of America suggested that this would be a great organization to give to,” he said.

“It’s a good thing for the runners to get together and say that wasn’t right. The only way terrorism wins is if you alter your life because of it.

“Red Cross needs money for when disaster strikes.”

  • Do White Castle prices tell us anything about the minimum wage?

NEW YORK - Economists love hamburgers. Specifically fast-food burgers. This is partly because all right-thinking human beings love ground meat on a bun, but it's also because the sandwich makes a handy yardstick for international financial comparisons. The ingredients and labor involved in preparing a Big Mac are pretty much the same no matter where you are in the world, so by looking at how many hours of toiling it takes a worker to earn enough to purchase one, you can get a sense of how wages really stack up across countries. The Economist famously created the Big Mac index in 1986 to see which currencies were overvalued. It started as a joke. Now, as the magazine proudly notes, it's a subject of academic study.
