As spring has rolled into Stanly County, the Stanly County’s farmer’s market opened for the first time in 2013 last Saturday.
With a colder than average March, farmers were primarily offering cold winter vegetables. There were other tables at Market Station offering crafts and other health items.
The Dezern family, owners of Dezern Farms in Asheboro, had one of the larger tables at Saturday’s market.
Blaze Dezern, 11, was assisting his parents, letting shoppers know what they had to offer.
“We got an arrangement of herbs, we got flowers, all kind of hanging baskets,” Dezern said.
“On the food side, we have sweet potatoes, purple cauliflower, some chai tee, and my dad makes all kinds of jam and jelly.”
Bracelets and key chains, which were made by Blaze and his sister, were also out for sale.
“We have a little bit of everything,” Dezern said.
Having just filled out several greenhouses, Dezern Farms hopes that the weather cooperates, which for their efforts, means little rain.
“No more rain,” his father Shawn said.
“Last year was good, and if it goes the way it’s been going, we’ll have a really good year,” Dezern said.
“If we get any more rain, it’ll drain out all the stuff we’ve planted.”
Toward the back of the market, Hope Farms had other “greens” for sale.
“Cold season greens. Mustard grain, Swiss chards, your spinach,” Sheila Menendez of Hope Farms said.
“Lettuce, romaine lettuce, radishes, green onions.”
As for the warm season vegetables, Menendez said they likely won’t be ready for another month.
“We’ll probably have some early cucumbers, maybe some early squash. And in the height of the season, we’ll have your typical okra, tomatoes, so forth,” Menendez said.
But Saturday at the market wasn’t conducted by only those with a farm or garden.
Fair Meadow Bakes, which is in Mt. Pleasant, had a table where people could buy a variety of breads.
Fair Meadow began in 2008 from a love of pizza.
Pat Gaddis and her husband Jay constructed a brick oven, where they began baking combinations of homemade pizza.
“We decided to start making breads and it kind of morphed from there,” Gaddis said.
One Friday night per month, Fair Meadow hosts an open pizza night, where they bake pizzas as long as people continue to show up.
Gaddis said they’ve continued to show up to the market because of the people they meet.
“We’ve been coming here since 2009 and we do very well here. We have a pretty loyal following,” Gaddis said.
The Stanly County Farmer’s Market is open each Saturday through October from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. The market will be open on Wednesday beginning in June.
