Shortly after classes let out Tuesday, school bus No. 47 from Albemarle High School was involved in an accident along U.S. 52 near Pizza Hut.
“The bus was still (stopped) at this time of the accident,” Assistant Superintendent Sandra Carter said.
“The EMTs are in the process of deciding whether medical attention is needed.”
Samantha Nall, a student on the bus, said the bus driver was getting ready to turn when a blue Dodge Durango hit them from behind.
“I guess [the driver of the Durango] couldn’t stop. We got hit and everybody went forward. I hit my head on the seat and I’m still dizzy.”
While the front end of the Durango was smashed in, the bus was practically unharmed.
Nall said the impact caused many students on the bus to be thrown forward, though.
“A lot of people hit something.”
Some of the students on the bus were pulled out on stretchers, while the rest gathered on the lawn outside Pizza Hut.
“Parents have been notified through school messenger, the district phone messenger system, and the students will be transported to another bus ... they will be delayed getting home,” Carter said.
Many parents were already present at the scene of the accident.
Bystanders said the driver of the Durango refused to go to the hospital. Following the accident she sat outside the bus and talked with police officers.
