Morrow Mountain burn raises curiosity

Smoke, smell fills Stanly air

Friday, February 28, 2014 — First there was a cloud of white smoke that appeared in an otherwise blue sky, then came a blue haze and stench of something burning.

Since Thursday Stanly County residents have been trying to find out where’s the fire and what’s ablaze.

The U.S. Forest Service conducted controlled burns at Morrow Mountain on Thursday and Friday. Much of the park and its trails were closed due to the fires.

Its burn spread across the sky Thursday, first prompting curiosity. Then on Friday, primarily due to windy conditions, smoke and stench of burning debris billowed throughout Albemarle.

Thursday’s burn consisted of 600 acres, followed by 450 more on Friday, according to Stanly County 911 Communications.
