A man was killed in a house fire early Friday morning, according to Stanly County Fire Marshal Michael Roark.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene after he was the only one of the home’s four residents not to escape the burning house, Roark said.
He was first taken to Stanly Regional Medical Center and then to the Medical Examiner’s office in Chapel Hill for positive identification, Roark said.
Another occupant was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, Roark said.
Roark said the blaze originated on the front porch, but a cause has yet to be determined. It remains an ongoing investigation.
Firefighters responded to the 5:41 a.m. blaze at 18832 Pleasant Hills Road, Mt. Pleasant. The house is in the Pleasant Hills Subdivision near the Stanly-Cabarrus County line.
Three fire departments responded to the scene, including Millingport, Ridgecrest and Northwest Cabarrus.
Roark said firefighters arrived on the scene nine minutes after dispatched, with the blaze under control 17 minutes later.
The identity of the man is being withheld at this time.
