The announcement sort of rolled off the tongue of New London Mayor Calvin Gaddy so easily, it was almost as if you were not sure what you had heard.
But, nevertheless, Gaddy confirmed at Tuesday's Town of New London commissioners meeting that he would not be seeking re-election for the position during this November's elections. He's been the mayor for 14 years.
"Hopefully I've done something that's been beneficial to the community. I retired 14 years ago at the same time I took this job. I'm not one that thinks people should get into office and stay forever," Gaddy said.
"I think our system in this nation is meant to evolve, which is not working because people in the national or state system go stay 40 years. I don't think that was ever intended.
"I'm not making a career out of it. I've already made my career. I retired one time and took this job when I retired, which is a volunteer job basically."
