Man capsizes boat at City Lake Park

Wednesday, March 12, 2014 — A Stanly County man managed to swim ashore after capsizing his small boat at City Lake Park.

The man plunged into the chilly waters Monday around 6 p.m., according to Albemarle Fire Battalion Chief Tony Russell. Between saturated clothing and heavy boots, the victim could not flip the boat back over. If not for wearing a life jacket, the man admitted that he might not have been able to escape more serious distress, Russell said.

A man from Concord fishing from an inflatable kayak said he saw the splash of the man tumbling into the water. He then paddled over to lend a hand.

The incident occurred on the southwestern side of the lake and on the opposite side of the public park area.

Meanwhile, a couple with a child also witnessed the man fall into the lake and then proceeded to exit the park and drive to the other side. The area was not passable by vehicle, so they had to walk to where the man was swimming toward. They helped the man scale the bank of the lake, Russell said.

Once the man made it to shore safely, he chose to forgo paddling back across the lake.

The good Samaritan who paddled over chose to tow the boat back to the park.

Russell described the victim as embarrassed from the ordeal, adding that he refused medical treatment.

The victim was taking advantage of the unseasonably warm temperatures as an opportunity to test a new boat.

Stanly County’s Station 70 rescue team responded with 10 emergency personnel and three pieces of apparatus, however, none had to enter the water since the man was safely out of the water by the time rescuers arrived.
