17-year-old dies in Moore County accident

Thursday, July 25, 2013 — First Sgt. Jeff Gordon, public information officer for the NC Department of Public Safety, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, issued the following statement today:

On Thursday, July 25, 2013 at approximately 5:13 am, the State Highway Patrol responded to a one car collision involving a pedestrian on US-15/501 near Boit Gilmore Lane just outside the city limits of Pinehurst.

A 2009 Nissan Altima, operated by William Gardner Mullen, 42, of Southern Pines, was traveling north on US/501 when it observed two juveniles standing in its lane of travel. The driver swerved, avoiding a 15 year old juvenile, but unfortunately struck the second juvenile. As a result of the collision the second juvenile died.

Speed and alcohol were not a factor in this collision.

The juvenile has been identified as Timothy Jeremiah Reeder, 17, of 100 Rider Lane, Southern Pines.

Upon completion of the investigation, the State Highway Patrol will confer with the Moore County District Attorney’s Office with its findings. However, based on the preliminary investigation, it is not anticipated that charges will be forthcoming against the driver.
