Anson County Sheriff's Office captures chase, kidnapping suspect

Monday, May 13, 2013 — Anson County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested the second suspect in the chase from last week.

Deputies arrested Robert Lamaar Smith, 23, of Morven in the Morven area around 4 p.m. Monday.

He was arrested without incident away from his house, according to Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen.

Deputies were returning Allen to Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office, where he awaits two first-degree kidnapping charges.

“We got him in custody and he’s on the way where he needs to be,” Allen said.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office identified Smith as the second suspect in the home invasion that occurred in the early morning hours of May 8 in the Midland area. A 92-year-old woman was seriously injured during this incident, law enforcement officials say.

This incident began as a home invasion in the University area of Charlotte, moved into Cabarrus County, through Stanly County and ended in Anson County, officials say.

The Economist famously created the Big Mac index in 1986 to see which currencies were overvalued. It started as a joke. Now, as the magazine proudly notes, it's a subject of academic study.
