Hudson takes down Kissell, Burr solidly beats Furr

Friday, November 9, 2012 — Stanly County voters helped retain a representative in the state house and replace one in the U.S. House.

Two-term Congressman Larry Kissell was defeated Tuesday by a man who worked for the Congressman he had defeated four years ago.

Richard Hudson, who had served as a congressional aide to Rep. Robin Hayes, won the District 8 seat with 53 percent of the vote to Kissell’s 45 percent.

The raw totals gave Hudson 159,256 votes against Kissell’s 134,918.

Hudson also took Stanly County, giving Hudson 17,691 and Kissell 10,069.

In a statement, Hudson said he was “excited about the opportunity ahead.”

“I’m ready to go to work,” he said.

Kissell conceeded the race at 10 p.m. releasing a statement that read, “Things didn’t work out as we had hoped, but as I told Richard earlier on the phone, he’ll be representing some of the best people in the world. I have considered it an honor to represent the people of the 8th District, and I look forward to the remainder of my term.”

Incumbant State Rep. Justin Burr posted a decisive victory over his Democratic opponent, Kevin Furr.

Burr had 22,702 votes, or 62 percent, against Furr’s 13,543 votes, with 37 percent of the district.

Burr’s home county provided more than half of his total, with 17,704 votes. Furr received 9,925.

Burr could not be reached for comment.
