City hoping former school site revitalizes downtown

Shannon Beamon, Staff Writer

Tuesday, October 22, 2013 — The City of Albemarle now hopes that the Old Central School building will play a  major role in revitalizing the downtown area.

Last night, the city council began the process of designating the Old Central School as a  Redevelopment Project.

If the designation is completed and approved, the city would have the opportunity to compete for tax credits through the NCHFA and would be assured that the property will be used for redevelopment purposes.

“The sale would probably be to a third party individual, but the area would be specified for redevelopment,” City Manager Raymond Allen said.

Once purchased, the new owners would have to adhere to a redevelopment plan as well as any pertinent governmental restrictions.
