Schools announce open house dates

Monday, August 19, 2013 — As the 2013-2014 school year draws near, schools in Stanly County will open their doors to welcome students, parents and community members.

School open houses are scheduled as follows:

Albemarle High School: 4-6 p.m.,Thursday, Aug. 22

Albemarle Middle School: 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Aquadale Elementary School: 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Badin Elementary School: 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Central Elementary School: Third through fifth grades, 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Central Elementary School: First and second grades, 4-6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23

No information has yet been given regarding Kindergarten open house.

East Albemarle Elementary School: 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Endy Elementary School: 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Locust Elementary School: 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Millingport Elementary School: 4-6 p.m., Wednesday.

North Stanly High School: 3-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

North Stanly Middle School: Sixth-grade, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesday.

North Stanly Middle School: Floating for seventh and eighth grades, 4-6:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22.

Norwood Elementary School: 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Oakboro Elementary School: 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Richfield Elementary School: 4-6:30 p.m., Wednesday.

South Stanly High School: Freshmen, 6-7 p.m., today (auditorium).

South Stanly High School: Upper classmen: 6-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

South Stanly Middle School: Sixth grade, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

South Stanly Middle School: Seventh and eighth grades, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Stanly Academy Learning Center: 5-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

Stanfield Elementary School: - 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22

West Stanly High School: Upper classmen, 2-4 p.m., Wednesday.

West Stanly High School: Freshmen, 6-7:30 p.m., Wednesday.

West Stanly Middle School: Sixth grade, 6-8 p.m., Wednesday (gymnasium).

West Stanly Middle School: Seventh and eighth grades, 6-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22 (floating)

The first day of school for Stanly County Schools is Aug. 26.

The first day of school for Gray Stone Day School is  Aug. 19.

    NEW YORK - Economists love hamburgers. Specifically fast-food burgers. This is partly because all right-thinking human beings love ground meat on a bun, but it's also because the sandwich makes a handy yardstick for international financial comparisons. The ingredients and labor involved in preparing a Big Mac are pretty much the same no matter where you are in the world, so by looking at how many hours of toiling it takes a worker to earn enough to purchase one, you can get a sense of how wages really stack up across countries. The Economist famously created the Big Mac index in 1986 to see which currencies were overvalued. It started as a joke. Now, as the magazine proudly notes, it's a subject of academic study.
