Albemarle teen hurt in U.S. 52 crash

Wednesday, December 4, 2013 — An Albemarle teenager was injured in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 52.

A car driven by Suzanna Danielle Smith, 17, was stopped in the northbound land of U.S. 52 at the intersection of Cottonville Road when a second car slammed into her from behind, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Min Kyung Yang, 47, also of Albemarle, failed to stop her 2007 Cadillac when she struck the 2002 Honda that Smith was driving, a Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.

Impact of the 2 p.m. crash sent Smith’s car into a ditch on the right shoulder of U.S. 52 where it overturned, reports state. Yang’s vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane of U.S. 52.

Yang was charged with failure to reduce speed, reports state. She was traveling at an estimated speed of 55 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

Smith was taken to Stanly Regional Medical Center, where she was later discharged, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Damages to the Honda, registered to Rhonda Lee Johnson, of Albemarle,  are estimated at $8,000. The Cadillac sustained about $10,000 in damages.

Both women were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, reports state.
