Daughter remains in hospital as investigators continue search for father's killer

Tuesday, November 12, 2013 — The lone survivor of an assault at a Rowan County farm remains hospitalized as investigators continue to piece together the incident that left her 87-year-old father dead more than a week ago.

According to a press release issued Tuesday by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, investigators have talked with Sandra Steen, 62, several times to obtain any information she can offer about the incident discovered by her son the morning of Nov. 6. The daughter of J.D. Furr, Steen is improving since last week, but investigators say she will “continue to endure a long recovery process.” Steen is formerly of Norwood.

“Sheriff’s Office investigators continue in their efforts to collect evidence and facts needed for a positive prosecutory outcome at a trial,” the release stated.

“While investigators cannot speak about details of this investigation or investigative strategies, to protect the integrity of the case, it does take time to thoroughly cover and exhaust each lead.”

The attack occurred sometime between 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and 8:15 a.m. Nov 6., at the Furr farm, just over a mile north of the Stanly County line, at 6225 River Road.

Officers swarmed the property that Wednesday searching with tracking dogs and questioning anyone who might have information. As the probe continued, TV media reported that detectives were back on the scene Friday after a family member had arrived and reportedly moved crime scene tape. Investigators have declined to comment on their return or to reveal whether they have a suspect in the case.

Meanwhile, friends and family members mourned the death of Furr, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, with a funeral on Veterans Day at Stanly Funeral Home Chapel in Albemarle.

Anyone with information about the murder of Furr and the attack on Steen, is asked to call Lt. Chad Moose, at (704) 216-8687 or Sgt. Jason Owens, at (704) 216-8683.
