Despite a hard economy, downtown Albemarle seems to be holding its ground.
According to the Albemarle Downtown Development Corporation’s 2012-2013 annual report, downtown Albemarle lost five businesses, but also gained five. Six jobs were lost and six were gained, and two downtown businesses expanded.
Kathy Almond, executive director of ADDC, said it’s important to note these numbers are not for the whole city of Albemarle, just its downtown area.
“We’re pleased, even in this economy, that no business was lost ... we broke even,” Almond said.
To keep those numbers up, ADDC worked with City of Albemarle and the Historic Resources Commission to request additional road signs from NCDOT to better mark the downtown area.
Four new signs reading “Downtown” were erected. Two can be found at the intersection of West Main Street and US 52 and two along NC 24-27 near Blue Bay and the Boy Scout office.
Two more signs reading “Downtown Albemarle” are scheduled to replace the old “Shop, Dine, Worship” signs along US 52 at Russell’s Automotive and the intersection with NC 24-27.
Almond feels the new signs make downtown Albemarle more accessible, which helps bring in business.
“When people are traveling down the main thoroughfares, it gives them direction,” Almond said.
Almond also attributes much of downtown Albemarle’s success this past year to ADDC’s volunteers. According to the annual report, they had 2,725 total volunteer hours.
Almond said there has been a lot of support from the community. Volunteers find what they like and help out there.
Some like to do flowerbeds and some like to do store inventories, Almond said. She feels everyone’s help has been integral in keeping downtown Albemarle in such good shape.
