Albemarle City Council awards debris bids

Tuesday, July 2, 2013 — Streets throughout Albemarle will soon begin to be cleared of storm debris following Albemarle City Council’s vote to approve a debris removal contract at Monday’s meeting.

Ceres Environmental Services Inc., a recovery and restoration management company with offices in several states, was awarded the bid. Crews with the company will be able to begin clean-up as early as July 11, according to Nina Carpenter, interim public works director.

“They are prepared to work 12-hour days from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week until the job is completed,” Carpenter said while addressing city council.

Crews with Ceres will make two passes through neighborhoods. The second pass will not be made on any street until at least seven days have passed, giving residents time to move leftover debris from the first pass to the street for removal.

Residents are being instructed to place any and all debris at the curb as crews will not be able to enter private yards. They are asked not to mix types of debris so that all household waste is disposed of in the roll-out carts.

Vegetative debris, such as tree limbs, leaves, logs and stumps, should be placed in the right-of-way while avoiding obstruction of traffic lanes. Any debris placed from the sidewalk toward homes will not be picked up.

Residents are also being asked not to set debris against trees or poles because this makes it harder for crews to remove the items.

Ceres Environmental crews will be able to remove debris that are four feet or longer but do not exceed 12 feet.

The debris will be hauled to a temporary disaster debris staging area at the old Wiscassett Mill property where it will be chipped and hauled away.

A contract was also awarded to Johnson Environmental & Disaster Consulting Services for the monitoring of the debris removal process.

Also during Monday’s meeting:

Brittany Gaddy and Everette Berry were sworn in as officers with the Albemarle Police Department;

Council voted to finance the Concord Kannapolis Albemarle waterline project with BB&T. Albemarle’s portion of the project, which is expected to cost approximately $7 million, will extend a water line from Richfield to Cabarrus County;

Council also approved BB&T for the financing of the Old Whitney Pump Station renovation; and

A public hearing is scheduled for Aug. 5 regarding a request to rezone property at 202 Northeast Connector from residential/general highway business (GHBD) to GHBD.

The next Albemarle City Council meeting will be 6 p.m. July 15.
