Health advocates suggest ways to get fit in 2013

Friday, January 3, 2013 — With 2013 still smelling powder fresh, there are any number of ways that the citizens of Stanly County can start the year off in a healthy way.

YMCA

The Stanly County Family YMCA is running a special of a no-joining fee for anyone interested in joining. The joining fee is normally $25 but has been waived for January.

“We want to encourage everyone to have a healthy mind, body and spirit for the new year,” said Stephanie Campbell, membership director at the YMCA.

The YMCA offers some suggestions families can practice at home to improve their family’s health and well-being:

Eat together;

Volunteer together;

Unplug from technology;

Be physically active; and

Put extras to good use by donating unneeded or extra canned goods and clothes to those who can benefit from them.    

Gold’s Gym

Gold’s Gym of Albemarle is presenting several specials and events for the new year.

“We have a Gold’s Gym Fitness Challenge and a 0 Enrollment Special. Our monthly dues are the same, but there is no joining fee,” Operations Manager Ben Newport said.

“This is always that time of year when people want to have their New Year’s resolution; we thinking joining Gold’s is the way to do that.”

Gold’s will have a class launch at 5 p.m. Jan. 7, showcasing every class at the gym. Each session will last 15 minutes and will briefly demonstrate what the class is like.

Albemarle Pilates

and Yoga (APY)

APY has numerous ways of helping one get the year started off right. In addition to a membership special, buy 10 classes get 10 classes free, APY has some recommendations for those new and interested in yoga.

“Start with a flow of sun salutations,” said Cindy Brewer, owner and head instructor at APY.

“Take your arms up and fold forward. Put your hands on the floor and step your feet back into plank pose, you can drop to your knees if want. Then lower to your belly.

“From there, push up into cobra pose: Keep your hips on the floor and lift your chest up. Roll back to downward facing dog: Hands and feet on the floor with you hips in the air.

“Walk your feet back up to your hands and come back to standing to finish the sequence.”

“You can start with one of these poses and add more as you get comfortable, building up to the whole sequence.

“Downward facing dog strengthens and stretches. For people who have been really sedentary, it’s a little more challenging posture.”

Brewer recommends doing one sun salutation a day until you can do seven a day.

Stanly Regional

Medical Center (SRMC)

Jennifer Rawlings, a dietician with disease management at SRMC, gave a couple alternative methods of helping get 2013 started off in a healthy way.

“There are a lot of things we teach in our courses, but I was talking about this with friends recently: Change your way of thinking,” Rawlings said.

“Start with positive encouragement ... positive thoughts and ideas.

“Think of it as a lifestyle change, not just a resolution. Figure out how to accomplish your goals.”

Rawlings recommended setting small, manageable goals and then doing one goal at a time.

“Ask yourself: How do I meet this goal?

“Change something in your eating, drinking or exercise.

“Make small goals to get to the point of exercising on regular basis if you’re not exercising regularly.”

For the winter season, Rawlings suggested root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots or beets.

“If you don’t normally like these types of foods, you can roast them with olive oil in the oven. It  brings out the natural flavor in the vegetables.

“It’s a good way to try out carrots if you don’t like carrots.”

    Last week I made my annual trip up the mountain to Sparta. My friends have a secluded home near a babbling brook. Their home and property are a haven for peace. It’s a two-plus hour ride to their home that doesn’t feel that long because I look so forward to my time with this great couple. When I arrive, the conversation seems to pick up right where we left it the last time we saw each other.
