Wednesday, January 23, 2013 — On Wednesday morning, Albemarle utility workers continued repairs to a water leak at Delco Plaza Shopping Center. Traffic has been narrowed to two lanes while a section of the highway is being resurfaced after being removed to make the repairs. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area.
Water rushed over the road Tuesday afternoon while members leaving Gold Gym pulled out their cell phones to take pictures of the localized flooding due to a major water leak along U.S. 52.
Albemarle Utilities Director Ellen Huntley confirmed that there was a major leak sometime Tuesday afternoon.
“The city is working on it,” she said Tuesday.
“We don’t know when it started and won’t really know much more until they find where the leak is.”
Huntley said that in the event of a break, water takes the path of least resistance.
It would appear that the path of least resistance leads to the Gold’s Gym parking lot at Delco Plaza, as water piled up by the inches, emptying back into a drain in the parking lot. Other portions of the shopping center were seeing small amounts of flooding, but were still accessible shortly before 5 p.m. The water had not yet reached the driveway in front of the stores that also includes All 4 Fun Inflatables and Uwharrie Medical Commons.
Huntley said homes and businesses in the area may see a reduction in water pressure for the time being as they search for the source and make necessary repairs.
