Two men die after New London accident

Monday, November 18, 2013 — Two Stanly County men have died following an accident late last week.

N.C. Highway Patrol reports that Barney Dean Edwards, 55, of New London, died Sunday night at Carolinas Medical Center-Main, and his passenger, Thomas Lee Simpson, 68, of Richfield, died upon impact following a wreck early Friday morning near New London.

Highway Patrol reports indicate Edwards was driving a 1999 Chevy Tahoe on N.C. 740 north of Moss Lane shortly before 5:30 a.m. The Tahoe ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, crossed the center line, ran off to the left and struck a ditch before overturning and striking a utility pole. The vehicle came to rest on its top, according to patrol reports.

Highway Patrol reports that no other vehicles were involved, but excessive speed was a factor. Officials are awaiting toxicology reports.

This is partly because all right-thinking human beings love ground meat on a bun, but it's also because the sandwich makes a handy yardstick for international financial comparisons. The Economist famously created the Big Mac index in 1986 to see which currencies were overvalued. It started as a joke. Now, as the magazine proudly notes, it's a subject of academic study.
