The Stanly County Extension and Community Association has awarded its 2018 Betty Watson Scholarship winners of $1,000 each.

Breanna Honohan, daughter of Donna Blalock of Oakboro, was awarded $1,000 towards furthering her education.

She is a graduate of West Stanly High School and attended Stanly Community College in the college transfer program. This fall she will attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to major in nutrition.

Honohan believes her career path will help others to learn that life is about being healthy and that choosing healthy is not a chore, but a choice that can improve their lifestyles.

Hannah Moss, the daughter of Stephen and Susan Moss of Norwood, also receives a $1,000 scholarship.

She is a graduate of South Stanly High School and in the fall will be a sophomore at Appalachian State University where she is majoring in nutrition.

She believes that eating healthy usually makes one feel better and that a healthy lifestyle begins with being both physically and mentally healthy.

The Betty Watson Scholarship is a memorial scholarship established in 1979 honoring the work of Betty Watson, former home economist and extension agent.

Applicants majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences or related area are given preference when selecting the scholarship winner(s).

The awards committee found these women to exhibit outstanding academic scholarship, initiative, character and leadership ability.
