A local lawyer represents one of 33 appointments Gov. Roy Cooper announced Monday.

Ronald W. Burris was one of three appointments Cooper made to the N.C. Private Protective Services Board. He was named as a public member of the board that administers the licensing, education and training requirements for persons, firms, associations and corporations engaged in private protective services within North Carolina.

Burris previously served on the state board.

“I’m glad to be back on the board,” Burris said. “It’s something that interests me from being in the legal system.”

As a public board member, Burris is charged with representing the consumer’s interest. During his previous service he spearheaded the board’s grievance committee, handling complaints and disciplinary action.

Albemarle attorney Charles P. Brown nominated Burris for the appointment.

Burris, of Albemarle, is a former judge in both District and Superior Court. After serving in the U.S. Army in military intelligence, Burris began to practice law, first as an associate lawyer then as a partner.

He is a certified mediator with the N.C. Dispute Resolution Commission.

Presently, Burris serves as the chairman of the Stanly County Board of Elections.

Joining Burris as a board appointee include Debra C. Duncan, of Monroe, and Raleigh’s Tammy B. Owens.

Duncan currently serves as the Guardian Ad Litem for Union County. She also served as a City Council Member and a former chief of police for the city of Monroe.

Owens is a Business Systems Analyst for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Cooper announced his nominations and appointments to 17 boards, commissions and councils.

“These committed North Carolinians will serve our state well,” Cooper said. “They have demonstrated their experience and dedication to our state, and I am grateful for their service.”
