Dr. Juanita “Terry” Conward

Dr. Juanita “Terry” Conward, 76, of Miami, FL passed away on Thursday, July 5 at Baptist Regional Hospital.
She was born October 12, 1941 in Badin. She attended West Badin High School and received her Bachelor’s in Sociology from Wright State University, a Master’s in Social Work from Howard University and a Doctorate in Social Work from Howard University.
She worked as an Assistant Director at Miami-Dade County Community Action Agency and dedicated her life to the welfare of children for over 40 years.
She was also an accomplished author.
She served as a member of the NABSW – National Association of Black Social Workers, NAACP, The Black Panther Party, a board member for The Center for Youth & Development.
She also served as a faithful former member of New Birth Baptist Church Cathedral of Faith International and for the last 10+ years, a member of New Jeruseleum Primitive Baptist Church.
A unique soul, Terry had a very loving heart embracing those around her with love, encouragement and compassion, taking in those needing a place to stay while providing them a safe haven to heal and mend their broken pieces.
She was also a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
She is survived by sons, Michael Conward, Maurice Pankey Conward; grandchildren, Michael Conward, II, Autumn Thomas, Apryl Thomas; a great-grandchild, London Luciano Clark. Also left to cherish her memory are her sisters, Willie Mae Harris, Elizabeth Christian, Marguerite Pankey of Badin and Walillian (Buddy) Tyson of Connecticut.
She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Walter Smith, brother, Walter Smith, Jr., (Miatta), sister, Geraldine S. Turner and son, William “Dute” Allen.
A memorial service will be in Miami, with a second service in Badin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Smith Family Scholarship Fund.
The family is receiving friends at the home of Elizabeth Christian of Badin.
