Several municipal seats remain open

Municipal filings are picking up, especially in Norwood where opposition is growing.

As Friday’s noon deadline for filing approaches, plenty of municipal seats remain open while a few municipalities have been much more active with filings. Some towns have been busier with filings than others.

Norwood incumbents Linda Campbell and Betty O’Neal filed Monday. Campbell, who as mayor pro tem, has been heading town meetings since Beverly Johnson’s resignation as mayor. Campbell officially filed for the mayoral seat, but not before Harold Thompson beat her to the punch.

New legislation changed Norwood’s charter for municipal offices. Effective after the next election, there will be one fewer members on the town council with the mayor to cast votes.

Former town commissioner Larry McMahon is running again for an at-large seat. With Campbell running for mayor, there are two at-large seats available. O’Neal represents the other seat.

Other than Norwood the only other municipality to show opposition at this time is Badin, which has been busy with filings early.

All three incumbents in Badin have filed for re-election. At-large Councilman Larry Milano has filed for re-election with Phillip Burdge posing opposition.

Anne Harwood, council east district, and Deloris (Dee) Chambers, council west district, have each filed for re-election in their respective offices.

The Badin Town Council determines its own mayor for two-year cycles.

In addition to Badin, filings for Locust have been active early. All incumbents in Locust have filed for re-election: Steve Huber (mayor), J.C. Burris, Roger Hypes and Mandy Watson (all council at-large).

Only one challenger has filed for one of four seats available in Oakboro. Lisa Cratty has filed to run for mayor while three at-large commissioner seats remain open.

Two of three seats in Misenheimer have filings. Incumbents Michael Herron and Peter Edquist have filed for new terms.

New London incumbent commissioners Christy Starnes and Marcus L. Mullis have filed for re-election. A mayoral seat remains open.

In Red Cross, Councilman J.J. Curlee has filed for re-election for the at-large seat. Another one remains without a candidate.

Monday’s filing of Stanfield Mayor Kevin Barbee ended the filing drought for the town. Two commissioner at-large seats remain open.

Richfield is the county’s only municipality without a single filing. A mayoral seat and two commissioner at-large seats remain available.
