In Stanly high school football games on the road Friday night, North Stanly, West Stanly and South Stanly suffered non-conference losses to open the season.

East Rowan 27, North Stanly 21

The Comets opened the season suffering a six-point loss to the Mustangs, the first season opening loss for a North team since the 2012 season.

D.J. Rhone and Garrett Clark each caught touchdown passes from Bailey Baker while Cameron Davis scored a rushing touchdown, his 69th as a Comet. He is 12 TDs away from tying the school record of 81 by Antonio Williams.

North has a bye this week and returns to action Aug. 31 at West Stanly.

East Rutherford 34, South Stanly 14

The Bulls made the two-hour trip to Forest City, suffering a 20-point loss to the Cavaliers.

Tori Colson had one of South’s touchdowns in the game on a 90-yard kickoff return.

The other score came on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Justin Gaddy to Tony Loftin.

Marcus Green led the Bulls with just under 100 yards rushing on the game.

Defensively, South’s Jitavis Huntley forced a fumble recovered by Rodney Hammond.

South’s game wrapped up just before 11 p.m. after starting at 7:45 in the evening. East Rutherford (1-0) had nearly 100 yards in penalties.

Northwest Cabarrus 52, West Stanly 6

The Colts went on the road to Concord Friday night and suffered the team’s second straight loss to open a season, losing to the Trojans.

The 46-point margin of defeat was the team’s second-worst ever to start a season. In 1974, South Stanly beat West 80-0 to open the season.

Senior running back Hunter Stoker helped West avoid the shutout with a three-yard TD run with 4:15 left in the fourth quarter.

The Colts host Albemarle this Friday night.
