Catawba College Director of Athletics Larry Leckonby announced Monday Terrence Baxter has been elevated to head women’s basketball Coach. Baxter has been the associate head coach the last three years and on the staff with the Catawba women’s program since 2013.

“First, I want to thank God, as this is a definite blessing to be in this situation,” Baxter said. “I am forever indebted to Angie Morton because I would never have been in this position without her.”

“I want to thank President Brian Lewis and Athletic Director Larry Leckonby for giving me this opportunity,” continued Baxter. “All the coaches, staff and faculty that said good words to make this possible and my team for fully supporting me. And I also want to thank my wife, family and friends who have made the biggest sacrifice over the past 13 years to make this dream possible.”

Baxter is a 2001 graduate of Pfeiffer University, where he was a two-time all-conference performer and helped the Falcons to a pair of league titles and one Sweet 16 appearance. In 2017, he was inducted into the Pfeiffer Sports Hall of Fame.

“Terrence has been an integral part of our women’s basketball program for the past five years and has been involved in all aspects of the program,” added Leckonby. “He was a Hall of Fame player, and now is an outstanding recruiter, assistant coach and mentor. He is a perfect fit to lead this program in 2018-19 and into the future.”

Catawba has produced five winning seasons with Baxter on the bench. In 2014-15, Catawba qualified for the NCAA II Southeast Regional Tournament.

“Coach Morton left the program in a great situation,” added Baxter. “Some things will change, but a lot will stay the same. The hard work will remain. I am excited to put a staff together and hit the ground running with a young and energetic team.”

Baxter began coaching as a men’s assistant in 2006 before joining the women’s basketball staff at Brevard College. Prior to joining Morton at Catawba, Baxter was an assistant at Queens, where he spent two seasons as recruiting coordinator.
