West Stanly volleyball improves to 5-2

The West Stanly volleyball team’s season continued with non-conference matchups, including road games last week at Northwest Cabarrus and Hickory Ridge and a home game Monday with the Gray Stone Knights.

West Stanly 3, Northwest Cabarrus 0

The Colts made it three wins in a row Aug. 21 with a sweep of the Trojans with scores of 25-17, 25-9 and 25-9.

Dani Moss led West with seven of the team’s 31 kills while Addie Barbee led the Colts with seven assists. Chassity Thomas paced West with 16 of the the Colts’ 36 kills while the team posted 13 service aces led by Caylee Clayton. West also had 24 blocks in the win.

Hickory Ridge 3, West Stanly 2

West got a tough test on the road Aug. 23 taking on the 4A Bulls. West trailed two sets to one then forced a fifth set after winning the fourth. The Colts lost the final set to end the team’s three-game win streak, 3-2.

Scores of the match were 24-26, 25-15, 25-22, 25-27 and 15-11 in favor of Hickory Ridge.

Addie Barbee led West with 12 kills while Dani Moss and Riley Barbee each added 10 kills. As a team, the Colts had 47 kills.

Addie Barbee also drove the Colts’ offense with 20 assists while Riley Barbee added 14 assists.

Chassity Thomas led West with 15 digs and Caylee Clayton had four services aces. Of the team’s seven blocks, Madison Kee led with three.

“The Colts fought point for point in each set with the Bulls, they didn’t give up. They are playing well and continue to build on their court awareness each match. I couldn’t be more proud of the way they are coming together as a team,” West head coach LaRhonda Watkins said.

The Colts got back to the team’s winning ways with a sweep of the Knights at home Monday.

Madison Kee and Dani Moss led West (5-2) with six kills each while Addie Barbee paced the Colts’ offense with 21 assists. Caylee Clayton had five of West’s 17 aces and Chassity Thomas had 14 digs to lead West.

Watkins said West “continues to play well and work together as a team on the court. ”

West plays on the road at Albemarle Wednesday and at Charlotte Latin Thursday.
