Gray Stone women, Comets men win YVC meet at Pfeiffer

The Gray Stone Knights hosted a Yadkin Valley Conference cross-country meet Tuesday on the Pfeiffer University course in Misenheimer. The Knights hosted North Stanly, North Moore, West Montgomery and Uwharrie Charter.

In the team events, the Gray Stone women and North Stanly men earned first place in the meets.

Women’s Results

Gray Stone posted the low score of 33 with its top five runners, followed by North Moore (44), North Stanly (53) and West Montgomery (110). Uwharrie Charter did not have enough runners to score as a team.

Four out of five of the Knights’ top runners finished in the individual top 10 Tuesday. Individual honors went to junior Jean Holman, who finished first for the Knights out of 54 overall runners with a time of 24:01.

Lillie Austin, a senior, was second for Gray Stone and fifth overall in 26:57, followed on her team by senior Ava Sangster (ninth-28:11) and juniors Sara Bruinsma (10th-28:14) and Macy Abramson (11th-28:23). Rounding out the top seven for Gray Stone were freshman Angelina Lappin (13th-29:02) and junior Danielle Werts (18th-30:08).

North Stanly had two of the top three finishers in the event in placing third. Senior Taylor Burleson was second overall and first for the Comets in 24:14, followed by freshman Lexi Goode (third-25:02). Andi Billingsley, a sophomore, placed 12th for North in 28:45 followed on her team by seniors Malia Selke (21st-30:32) and Skylar Medlin (22nd-30:41). Junior Colbie Lentz finished sixth for the Comets and 23rd overall in 31:16 while Emma Hatley was 35th overall in 33:55.

Men’s Results

The Comets took five of the first eight places and ran away with the overall team victory with 25 team points. Gray Stone finished second with a 58, followed by North Moore (72), Uwharrie Charter (76) and West Montgomery (149).

Comet freshman Koby Poole put in the fastest time overall out of 55 men’s cross-country runners Tuesday. Poole took first place with a 20:09, 26 seconds faster then North Moore’s Graham Garner.

North freshmen Nicholas McClure (20:53) and Clay Hatley (20:58) finished fourth and fifth overall, respectively. David Hopkins, a senior, took seventh with a 21:43 while the Comets’ top five was rounded out by freshman Kasey Smith, who placed eighth in 21:51. Hayden Furr was sixth for North Stanly and 12th overall (22:52) while Kevin Hunsucker, a junior, placed 14th with a 23:10 finish.

Noah Maness was the top runner for Gray Stone’s men’s squad, placing third in 20:48. He was followed on his team by Hunter Smith (10th-22:29), Josh Klein (11th-22:39), Ashton Riedel (15th-23:22) and Dylan Tuzenew (19th-23:44). Rounding out the top seven for the Knights were sophomores Alec Barbetto (22nd-24:20) and Duncan Bryson (23rd-24:21).
